When you get some new park skis or board I would recommend doing one of two things right away. The contact point is where the edge begins to round. Even though the banana shape makes it harder to catch an edge, you should still detune in between your contact points, and your tip and nose, although you probably don't have edges there on your Gnu. Just enough to knock the sharp edge down a little.-detune moderately with a diamond stone from the rocker contact point to the taper point-detune heavily with a file at a 45 from taper point ⦠Remember to always file in one direction. For most skis, this will be the widest part. I also ride a Gnu, with BTX, and I detune mine every time I sharpen the edges. Again, begin at the wide point near the nose and work your way to the corresponding wide point at the tail, always using the guide to keep the file flush. Pay close attention to any sticking points. I had a board once that came detuned at the contact points. Ever since then I have flatly refused to ride anything detuned. detune the ENTIRE ski, including sidecut underfoot, with a soft gummy stone. I fucking HATED how it transitioned onto edge until I got a new edge bevel set in. By contact points, we mean the flat part of nose and tail of the ski or snowboard the makes contact with the ground when pointed downhill. Another angle Asking your tech for 2° base bevel or asking him to detune the ski underfoot keeping the rest of the effective edge nice and sharp. Snowboard vises normally hold the board upright or at a slight angle (and width hasnât changed much over the years) so compatibility isnât a problem. You then want to file at different angles so you round the edge, instead of creating a flat one. mpusa1Nate Septemat 5:48 pm - Reply I ride a K2 Carveair, 154 cm, Ride insano boots (9/10 stiffness) and Now 2017 Drive bindings (9/10 stiffness). I'd especially be wary of detuning a rocker board, you already lose a ton of bite at the contact points. This will stop you from catching edges on rails while still allowing you to grip on those icy take-offs. Photo: Nick Hamilton/TRANSWORLD SNOWBOARDING Find the widest part of your board at the nose and tail thatâs called the contact point. When de-tuning your board, start with your Tip and Tail as these are your biggest contact points to the snow. De-Tuning the edges will allow you to manipulate how the board will ride and perform while on the snow. Contact points are at both ends and on both sides of each ski. The area you need to detune extends about 2 in (5 cm) above and below these contact points. This will be the reference to use when detuning your tip and tail. Once you have found them, de-tune the edges about 5-10cm past the contact points. The job of an edge is to cut into a surface and hold while weight is put against it, meaning sharp edges hold better and dull edges slide easier. I prefer to detune the contact points and put a 1°/2° base bevel in between the feet. Take a fine file and scribe up and down the edge to take away the sharpness to stop you catching an edge when turning, or when performing 180 or 360 jumps and landing slightly on an edge. If your board is new, however, it probably needs to be waxed. From the tip, how far you detune behind the contact point is a matter of personal preference, and you should ride the skis or board first before making a decision. Place your elbow on the board to get yourself into a good position that gives you leverage for filing your edges. once u lay the board down on it side, the 2 points that touch the ground are the contact points. when the board is flat, once you start turning, the boards camber will flex and these "contact points" will be the first part of the effective edge to come into play with the snow. Detuning the edges of your snowboard at the tip and tail, as well as between the contact points can lessen your chances of catching an edge by dulling the most likely problem spots. ![]()
